String Dreams
------------------------

Tugging at the strings
slowly turning
left, then right
fingers, expertly directing
as the marionette dances in the stage.

Faces lighting up
eyes sparkling
as children watch the show
-fascinated-
with the dancing figure in the front.

Circus music flooding in
as a second figure joins the first
old fingers
moving perfectly in rhythm
dancing with the strings.

The crowd watches
as the story unfolds
enthralled
as two silent figures
intertwine before their eyes.

Silent notes floating through the air
the crowd jumping to its feet
applause, applause,
a wrinkled smile
a silent bow.

Eyes opening
slowly breathing in
smile slowly dissipating
as wrinkled old hands
slowly grip the handle of the broom.

I was smilling, thinking, "oh how sweet," the whole way through, and then on the last word I did a double-take and it was so sad... but maybe it shouldn't be sad, that the people doing these jobs should have such beautiful daydreams to keep them entertained.
Perfectly written, I read through it smoothly and stopped with a bump at the end like a carnival ride.
